Medical news digest for July from Loran

The Loran team is once again pleased to share with you a new selection of interesting medical news that impressed us in July 2023.

The relationship between the development of Parkinson's disease and the intestinal microbiome has been discovered

Parkinson's disease is usually associated with brain problems, but researchers from the University of Surrey and the University of Alabama at Birmingham have looked at the connection between the disease and the gut microbiome.

In general, the impact of intestinal microflora on human health is known, but scientists have drawn attention to the fact that what happens in the gut can have far-reaching consequences for the brain. Parkinson's disease is neurodegenerative in nature, affecting the neurons that produce dopamine, which is responsible for regulating movement.

The manifestations of this disease slowness of movement, tremors, stiffness, and balance problems are well known, but other symptoms may be associated with the disease, and these are called non-motor symptoms.

The researchers conducted a metagenomic study of the gut microbiome and found that people with Parkinson's have a slightly different microbiota composition than healthy people. They identified certain types of bacteria that may be associated with the development of infections and other diseases. At the same time, they found abnormalities in the levels of certain neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, glutamate, GABA, and serotonin, which can affect the nervous system and the development of the disease.

Although the researchers note that the current study does not allow us to say for sure that the gut microbiome is the initial cause of Parkinson's disease, they have nevertheless discovered interesting links between the microbiota and the disease. Further research may help to understand how these two systems interact and may find new ways to treat and prevent Parkinson's disease.

The study predicts that the number of diabetes patients will double by 2050

Diabetes is a problem of our time that is rapidly becoming a global epidemic. A recent large-scale study conducted by scientists in 204 countries has stunned with its predictions: by 2050, the number of diabetics will more than double to an incredible 1.3 billion people.

Diabetes differs by type, but in both cases, it is characterized by high blood sugar levels. Type I diabetes, which most often develops in childhood or adolescence, is an autoimmune disease where the body cannot produce insulin. Type II diabetes, which is most common among adults, develops due to insulin resistance.

Several factors are driving the increase in the number of diabetes patients by 2050, including an aging population and an obesity epidemic.

However, we can take the initiative into our own hands. The development of new technologies and breakthrough medicines can be key in the fight against the spread of diabetes. Scientists, doctors, and society as a whole must come together and take large-scale action to prevent the development of type II diabetes and ensure a healthy future for billions of people. The changes we make today can define a world without diabetes tomorrow.

We hope you found these two news stories useful. We believe that keeping abreast of the latest developments in the field of medicine is extremely important for everyone.

First, such updates allow you to be right in the middle of innovations and improvements in the treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of diseases, which can significantly improve our health and quality of life.

Secondly, staying up to date with medical news helps us understand current global health issues, such as epidemics or pandemics, and make informed decisions about our safety measures and preventive actions.

In general, it promotes health literacy, a conscious approach to health, and helps us to be responsible for our health and well-being.
