At the end of August, we are sharing with you news from the medical field. We have selected several interesting and important discoveries that can greatly help humanity in the future.
New research: Diabetes drugs may protect against Alzheimer's disease
A new study in the field of medicine has found that drugs designed to fight diabetes may have an unexpected positive effect on reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
The results showed that the use of TDZ-based drugs intended to treat diabetes is associated with a significant reduction in the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. During the observation of volunteers over twenty years old between 2000 and 2019, scientists noticed an impressive reduction in the risk of dementia - from 11% to 57%.
Experts believe that this exciting effect may be due to improved blood circulation, promoting vascular health, and an overall increase in brain function. The positive effect is especially noted in patients over 75 years of age.
New vaccine: a breakthrough in the fight against Epstein-Barr virus
Scientists at the Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Australia have announced a revolutionary step in medical science - they have developed a vaccine against mononucleosis, also known as the "kissing disease". It is known that this disease is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is also associated with the risk of developing some serious diseases, including multiple sclerosis and certain types of throat and nose cancer.
The newly developed vaccine is aimed at stimulating the immune system, in particular, the lymph nodes, which play an important role in protecting the body. Scientists conducted a series of studies on mice, where the vaccine showed impressive results - it promoted the active formation of antibodies and T-lymphocytes that specifically respond to EBV.
Air pollution affects the risk of cancer
Due to the extremely rapid increase in cancer rates around the world, scientists are constantly studying the possible causes of this epidemic. One of the main ideas is that lifestyle, including diet and environment, can influence the risk of cancer. A recent study conducted by researchers at Harvard University in Boston, USA, found an interesting link between air pollution levels and the risk of developing certain types of cancer.
The researchers studied data from people over 65 for 16 years, analyzing the impact of two types of air pollutants - PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) - on the occurrence of certain types of cancer.
The results of the study confirmed that long-term exposure to PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide primarily increases the risk of colorectal and prostate cancer. Interestingly, the association between PM2.5 levels and breast cancer risk appeared to be more limited, with nitrogen dioxide having a greater impact in this case. This may be due to the composition of PM2.5 particles, as they can include a variety of chemical compounds due to their nature as a mixture of particulate matter and droplets.
